Greek Frozen Yogurt Shop Tata's Opens in Coconut Grove
Tata's Yogurt Bar brings authentic Greek frozen yogurt to Coconut Grove, featuring honey-sweetened flavors and Mediterranean toppings like olive oil and baklava.
Owner Maria Papadopoulos, who moved to Miami from Athens three years ago, said she wanted to introduce South Floridians to authentic Greek-style frozen yogurt, which differs significantly from the artificially sweetened versions found at chain stores.
“In Greece, we sweeten our yogurt with honey, not high fructose corn syrup,” Papadopoulos said. “The texture is creamier, more like gelato, and the flavors are more natural.”
Tata’s, located on Main Highway near the heart of The Grove, offers six rotating flavors of frozen yogurt made with organic milk and Greek honey. The signature flavor combines traditional Greek yogurt with Kalamata olive oil and sea salt — an unusual but surprisingly popular combination that Papadopoulos says reflects her homeland’s culinary traditions.
The shop’s toppings bar features Mediterranean-inspired options alongside familiar favorites. Customers can choose from fresh figs, pistachios, baklava crumbles, and candied orange peel, as well as standard offerings like fresh berries and granola.
“I wanted to create something that felt like home but also appealed to Miami’s international palate,” Papadopoulos explained. “Coconut Grove has always been a place where different cultures come together.”
The interior reflects this philosophy, with white-washed walls reminiscent of Greek island architecture and local artwork from Wynwood artists. Blue and white tiles imported from Santorini line the serving counter, while tropical plants add a distinctly South Florida touch.
Papadopoulos, who worked as a pastry chef in Athens before moving to Miami, said she chose Coconut Grove specifically for its walkable, village-like atmosphere that reminded her of Greek neighborhoods.
“The Grove has this bohemian, artistic energy that feels very European,” she said. “People here appreciate quality ingredients and authentic flavors.”
Tata’s Yogurt Bar is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with extended hours on weekends. The shop also plans to offer Greek coffee and traditional pastries like galaktoboureko in the coming months.
For Miamians seeking an alternative to typical frozen desserts, Tata’s offers a taste of the Mediterranean without leaving the 305.
